It’s the 1st of June 1914 and Hugh Stanton, ex-soldier and celebrated adventurer is quite literally the loneliest man on earth. No one he has ever known or loved has been born yet. Perhaps now they never will be.
Stanton knows that a great and terrible war is coming. A collective suicidal madness that will destroy European civilization and bring misery to millions in the century to come. He knows this because, for him, that century is already history.

My Review

What a fantastic book this was, and one that I didn’t even know existed until I saw mention of it on What Cathy Read Next last Sunday morning.

To be honest I was a bit unsure about reading it because I’d tried a book by Ben Elton before, (The First Casualty) and gave up on it because I really didn’t the main character. Well, when I saw it was only 99p on Kindle I gave it a try and I’m so glad I did as it’s turned out to be one of favourite reads this year!

I was drawn by the time travel idea and also that it was partly set in 1914, a part of history I’m interested in. I really liked the main character Stanton, which was a great relief, and I enjoyed going on this weird and wonderful journey with him, meeting some fantastic characters along the way.

The plot was very well paced keeping my reading all the way through, trying to guess what was going to happen next. There were some great twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting and the ending was very well done.

I definitely recommend this for lovers of time travel, history, thrillers and mysteries.
