From Goodreads: “Rosemary Woodhouse and her struggling actor-husband Guy move into the Bramford, an old New York City apartment building with an ominous reputation and only elderly residents. Neighbours Roman and Minnie Castavet soon come nosing around to welcome them and, despite Rosemary’s reservations about their eccentricity and the weird noises she keeps hearing, her husband starts spending time with them. Shortly after Guy lands a plum Broadway role, Rosemary becomes pregnant and the Castavets start taking a special interest in her welfare.
As the sickened Rosemary becomes increasingly isolated, she begins to suspect that the Castavets’ circle is not what it seems.”
My Review
Well this was a great story! I don’t normally read horror, but I enjoyed The Stepford Wives written by the same author, and thought I’d give it a go, especially as the mobile library had a copy available on Monday morning. š
The introduction by Chuck Palahniuk really set the scene for me, making the book really creepy before I’d even started it.
This book is so tense and full of atmosphere, because you know something very weird is going on. Is Rosemary imagining things or are those things really happening? Why were those elderly neighbours so friendly? Were they just being neighbourly or did they have an ulterior motive?
Like all good psychological thrillers I had my suspicions and gasped a few times when certain things did occur, having an inkling at where the plot was headed. That sense of foreboding stayed with me as Rosemary grew more concerned. Her husband Guy was not at all helpful, in fact sometimes he was downright patronising, although he did occasionally apologise for being so wrapped up in his latest acting job.
I really did not want to put this book down, as I needed to find out what was going to happen to Rosemary and her baby. I really hoped everything would turn okay for them, but I had a feeling of dread that it wouldn’t.
I definitely recommend this one if you enjoy psychological thrillers and horror stories.
I never read it but it’s always in the background as one I would like to read

It is. I’d forgotten about that when I had my re-read a few years ago and as I turned the final page I was like wait what that’s the ending? š

‘Tense’ and ‘a sense of foreboding’ exactly describe my feelings, when watching the movie. Excellent review, I now want to read the book as well!

I like this one! Been a long time since I read it, but the creepiness and uncertainty stuck with me. Great classic in horror!

I did not read either Rosemary’s Baby or The Stepford Wives but I have seen both movies. I am always afraid to read a book after seeing a movie because I already have certain ideas in my head. Great review of this one Nicki. I am glad you enjoyed it despite it not being your usual genre.

Thanks Carla I’d still like to see The Stepford Wives film, but I’m not keen on watching Rosemary’s Baby after seeing the trailer.

Did they remake that one. I watched it way back like 40 years ago or more.

Yes I think it was more of a comedy with Nicole Kidman and Matthew Broderick.

I love tense and atmospheric books so this sounds worth it! Even though I’ve watched the movie so already know the plot and ending, if it’s the same as the book.

I haven’t seen the film so can’t compare, but I enjoyed it.

Like quite a few, I’ve also seen the movie- definitely a vibe going on with it- a good choice for a horror movie night š I have been meaning to read the book or anything by Chuck just to ‘tick a box’ so hopefully I’ll manage to do just that in the future.
Great review!
