Rex Fortescue, king of a financial empire, was sipping tea in his ‘counting house’ when he suffered an agonising and sudden death. On later inspection, the pockets of the deceased were found to contain traces of cereals. Yet, it was the incident in the parlour which confirmed Jane Marple’s suspicion that here she was looking at a case of crime by rhyme!

My Review

I enjoyed this Miss Marple mystery, although it was slow to get going, and I did think about DNFing a few times. I’m glad I stuck with it though, because I thoroughly enjoyed it in the end. I think part of my initial dislike, apart from all the usual unlikeable characters of course, was because there were so many characters and I kept getting confused as to who was who. It wasn’t until Miss Marple turned up that I actually began to really enjoy the story, as she made it far more interesting and I knew things would begin to make sense.

I remember watching the TV adaption a while ago and thought I knew who the murderer was, but as usual I got sidetracked by those marvellous Christie red herrings. However I remembered who it was in the end so was very pleased with myself when Miss Marple explained it all to the Inspector.

Richard E. Grant’s performance he was superb as usual, making it a wonderful listening experience.
