Towards Zero by Agatha ChristieSynopsis: “One of Agatha Christie’s own ten favorite novels, Towards Zero puts Superintendent Battle and Inspector Leach on the case as they investigate the murder of an elderly widow. What is the connection among a failed suicide attempt, a wrongful accusation of theft against a schoolgirl, and the romantic life of a famous tennis player? To the casual observer, apparently nothing. But when a house party gathers at Gull’s Point, the seaside home of an elderly widow, earlier events come to a dramatic head. As Superintendent Battle discovers, it is all part of a carefully laid plan–for murder.

My Review

I really enjoyed this audiobook, although it took ages to get going, and was full of horrible characters! It’s the fourth and final book in the Superintendent Battle stories, so not a Miss Marple or Poirot mystery.

I’m not going to mention the plot as it’s definitely one of those books that’s best to go in blind.

I loved meeting up with Superintendent Battle again, having enjoyed my previous encounters with him in The Secret of Chimneys, The Seven Dials Mystery and Murder is Easy. I laughed out loud when he mentioned Poirot a couple of times in the book, and thought that Agatha Christie must have enjoyed putting that dialogue in.

It was a very clever mystery, jam packed with classic red herrings from the Queen of Crime! Everyone was suspicious and not particularly nice either, so I was never too sure who the murderer was, until just before the big reveal.

Hugh Fraser’s narration was superb as always. His voice talents were so good for all the different characters, regardless of age, gender or nationality!

Highly recommended if you enjoy golden age murder mysteries.
