41saZ6o2cxL._SL500_Synopsis: “One of Agatha Christie’s most loved mysteries, Evil Under the Sun remains one of her best and most delightfully cryptic murder mysteries ever, read by Poirot himself – David Suchet.

The beautiful bronzed body of Arlena Stuart lay face down on the beach. But strangely, there was no sun and Arlena was not sunbathing…she had been strangled.

Ever since Arlena’s arrival at the resort, Hercule Poirot had detected sexual tension in the seaside air. But could this apparent ‘crime of passion’ have been something more evil and premeditated altogether?

My Review

I really enjoyed this audiobook, especially as the murder is near the beginning and Poirot just happened to be there on the spot, on holiday.

I saw a dramatised version of this a few years ago, and thought I knew the story, but I got a bit confused as it didn’t seem to be going in the way I remembered. It didn’t spoil my enjoyment of it at all as I just settled into the story, trying to work out who  the murderer might be.

There weren’t too many unlikeable characters in this mystery which definitely helped me to enjoy it more. The police had a few theories, but it was a particular question from Poirot that made them look at the murder from a completely different angle.

The big reveal was really well done, particularly the way the murderer was unexpectedly brought out into the open, as Poirot was doing his summing up.

David Suchet’s narration was excellent. I particularly enjoyed his portrayal of Odell Gardiner, the husband of a nervous American lady, and of course his portrayal of Poirot himself!

Recommended if you enjoy golden age murder mysteries on audio!
