Synopsis: “Suspicious events at a Middle Eastern archaeological excavation site intrigue the great Hercule Poirot as he investigates a Murder in Mesopotamia, a classic murder mystery from Agatha Christie.
Amy Leatheram has never felt the lure of the mysterious East, but when she travels to an ancient site deep in the Iraqi desert to nurse the wife of a celebrated archaeologist, events prove stranger than she could ever have imagined. Her patient’s bizarre visions and nervous terror seem unfounded, but as the oppressive tension in the air thickens, events come to a terrible climax–in murder.
With one spot of blood as his only clue, Hercule Poirot must embark on a journey not just across the desert, but into the darkest crevices of the human soul to unravel a mystery which taxes even his remarkable powers.”
My Review
I really enjoyed this audiobook, another brilliant Poirot mystery.
I enjoyed being transported to an archaeological dig in Iraq with Amy Leatheram, a nurse employed by the head of the dig to keep an eye on his wife, who was said to have ‘fancies’. The story is told from Amy’s point of view, as she writes her account of what happened.
Everyone in this story was very suspicious, and everyone seemed to have a very good motive for murder. Hercule Poirot was definitely needed to solve the case.
Unlike the TV adaptation, Hastings isn’t in this book, so as Poirot questions the suspects he asks Amy for her help in understanding the victim, which he is convinced is the key to solving the murder.
It wasn’t until just before the big reveal, that I finally decided who the murderer was, and I was right, which was very satisfying!
Anna Massey narrated this story and she was very good, apart from her accent for Poirot. Fortunately it didn’t spoil my enjoyment of the story..
Highly recommended if you enjoy Agatha Christie’s mysteries on audio.
Lovely review! Maybe next year I’ll get round to reading my first Agatha Christie… haha!! xx
