Standalone Sunday was created to let others know about all the standalone books you have loved, but maybe don’t get the attention they need. Megan created the banner as well and anyone joining in can use it too. Why not check out her blog too
This week I’ve chosen the audio version of a Norwegian translation, Doppler by Erlend Loe and narrated by Paul Blake
Here’s the blurb from Goodreads:
“Doppler has just lost his father. Despite the fact that he has a pregnant wife and two children, he decides to move into the woods . Here he starts a lonely and purposefully boring existence. He has never been so happy.
When Doppler kills a she-elk for meat he can’t feel guilty about it, but he does feel a bit guilty about the calf she left behind. When the baby elk adopts him, Doppler is tempted to knock it down as well. But the little elk is wily and escapes death, and gradually they become friends. He names the little elk Bongo.
Doppler is a charming, absurd and subversive novel with serious undertones and criticism of our modern consumer society.”
I came across this audiobook when AudioGo (the old BBC audiobook company) were having an sale leading up to Christmas one December years ago. I think it was only 99p so I thought I’d give it a try and I ended up really enjoying it. I don’t normally like odd books but this made a laugh out loud quite a few times. The narrator Paul Blake was perfect and really did Doppler whilst I was listening.
That reminded me of how sad I was when I watched Bambi:(

I’m doing Wait for It by Mariana Zapata. It’s 15hrs 52 mins on audiobook but as long as it’s good, I’m okay with long books.

The Wall of Winnipeg and Me was that long and I enjoyed the book. So I’m hoping for the same.

I like your review, but I’m not sure this is the book for me as it sounds a little dull. A man and his elk…? Maybe there’s more to the story than I realize. The cover is great, though.

No worries, there is more to the story but it is a quirky one and not to everyone’s taste.

Nice to see an audio book featured! I have to turn to audio more often now and it is hard to find titles that are as easy to appreciate in that form. Well, at least for me. This sounds like a very curious read. Not writing it off 🙂
