As mentioned in a recent Top Ten Tuesday post I wasn’t much of a re-reader, until last year when I discovered the joy of re-reading a favourite book.
I always thought that re-reading was a bit of a waste of time, I mean why read something old that you know inside out, rather than discover something new and exciting?
As book bloggers we read and enjoy a lot of ARCs, be that directly from publishers and authors, or via NetGalley and Edelweiss. Between those advanced copies we also try to read our own books, faithfully waiting on the shelves for a look in between those wonderful proofs.
Some time last year I remember feeling a bit low and in need cheering up, but I wasn’t too sure what to do. Read an ARC, library book or maybe listen to an audiobook? I went for an audiobook through my library, even though I’d listened to it earlier in the year, The Wedding Diary by Margaret James, that I knew would be a perfect fit for my mood.
It was and had me smiling and laughing out loud as I saw the events take place in my mind’s eye. My mood was instantly lifted and I thoroughly enjoyed my re-reading/listening experience.
I must admit that I did feel very indulgent listening to something I’d only listened to six months before, when I also had ARCs and library books calling to me, but it also felt so right. It really didn’t matter that I was already familiar with the story, in fact it probably helped that I could concentrate more on the characters rather than trying to second guess the plot.
I never would have guessed that this would be one of the great pleasures of re-reading, luxuriating in the descriptions and relaxing into the story.
I’d love to know if you re-read or listen again to your favourite books?
Re-reading is the only way to get the most out of the best books. If a book is only worth reading once, I’d argue it wasn’t that important to begin with, especially if you don’t remember reading it six months down the road. Of course… you could always re-read it and find out for certain. 😛

I’ve never re-read a book. Like you say, we have so many. I wouldn’t know where to find the time!

If you had the time would you be tempted?

Maybe, yes. Like The Hobbit or more recently, The Seven Deaths. But we both it’s never going to happen 😄

Couldn’t agree more. My TBR is already out of control, I can’t imagine having to dump my ‘read’ pile onto it! There are a select few I would re-read. I do tend to do a few audiobook second rounds on books I really loved.

I read Harry Potter series around 7 times, and the Hobbit maybe even more, and each time I manage to find something new and they never cease to amaze me 🙂

Fantastic! I’ve never Harry Potter but I’ve read the Narnia books a few times and know what you mean 🙂

I never feel like I have time to re-read but actually, when I do, I thoroughly enjoy it. I’m trying to do more of that this year.

I am re-reading The Humans by Matt Haig and feeling all the stresses of blogging just melt away. I don’t re-read very often but when I do it is so good!

I don’t remember the last book that I reread, it must be years and years ago.😂
Saying that, however, I have a fair few books that I’d like to find the time to reread.😀 Probably leave them for when I quit blogging.😉

I re-read pretty much all the time lol if I’m in a mood and can’t decide what to pick up next, I usually pick up a goodie but an oldie and like you’ve mentioned, I get instantly out of my funk mood. 💕

I used to re-read books all the time but since blogging just never get around to it! I’ve been wanting to re-read The Night Circus recently, it’s one of those books I’m sure I’ll notice something new – I just need to make some time!

I haven’t re-read many books, although with audio books I have (in the past at least, I did listen to some audio as a teenager). I think re-reading like re-watching a great film or show can give a new insight into a story like a mystery, as well as just give pleasure especially if it’s something that really cheers us up. I think I feel under pressure form having so many books to read that I don’t re-read as often as I’d like to, but I do remember that in the past when I didn’t have that pressure and was really into reading a lot I did enjoy picking up the same book over and over, a teen book but still it had me glued to the pages 🙂 Great post, have you done many discussion posts, I think I’ve missed them 😮 😦

I very rarely reread but there are certain books that I turn to when I am in a slump or feeling a certain way! It is something I would love to do more often because there are some books that I read many years ago and I am curious to see what I would think of them now!

Usually by the time i re-read stuff, i had forgotten most of the plot, or the small details, etc, so it’s almost like reading a new book 😀

I honestly love the idea of rereading because of how you can discover all the things you might have missed the first time and enjoy the book with a whole new perspective. I don’t however plan on rereading anything anytime soon (unless its a comic book/graphic novel) since I need time to forget the details of the stories I loved. I think a nice big wait between rereads is the most ideal thing for me to do (like 5 years or something). I also feel like I’m already waaaaayy tooooo behind on the books I want to read (especially with my slow reading speed) to even think about rereading books I’ve read hahahah 😛

I make time for rereading quite often; I absolutely love returning to a tried & true favourite. There is a luxury & comfort to rereading, as you say. Interesting to hear thoughts on rereading from someone who once didn’t return to books. Great post!

I love rereading! I always find some new detail to obsess over when I reread and reread and reread (as is the case with Harry Potter and I don’t even know how many times I’ve read haha)

You’ve mentioned the exact reason I try to reread books every once in a while! It’s like putting on your pajamas, getting a steaming cup of tea, snuggle up and be comfortable with a story you already know you are going to enjoy. It’s one of my go to steps whenever I’m down and want to cheer myself up.
