From Goodreads: “When Milo Ames receives a troubling letter from his childhood nanny, Madame Nanette, he and Amory travel to Paris where they are soon embroiled in a mystery surrounding the death of a famous parfumier. The more Amory and Milo look into the motives of industry rivals and heirs who are vying for control of his perfume empire, the more they are convinced that Nanette may be right. When secrets unfold and things take a dangerous turn, Amory and Milo must work quickly to uncover the essence of the matter and catch a killer before the scent goes cold.“
My Review
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook, the fourth in the Amory Ames cosy mystery series. This time Amory and her husband Milo are in Paris helping out Milo’s former nanny , Madame Nanette with a delicate situation regarding her recently deceased employer.
It was so good spending time with Amory and Milo Ames again, my favourite amateur sleuths. I love how they get involved in these mysteries, and how Amory throws herself right into finding out what exactly is going on and by who!
Once again there were lots of dodgy relatives who I really didn’t trust, plus a rather dashing French airman and a very grumpy German sculptor. Who was guilty and who was innocent? I had a few suspicions but they kept changing as the story progressed, and of course I was completely wrong. There was a fantastic twist in this book that I definitely did not anticipate!
Another fabulous audiobook narrated expertly by Karen Cass, who managed to portray a wide variety of French characters, as well as her maid Winnelda. I especially enjoyed her portrayal of Amory and Milo, loving the banter between them, particularly when Milo is being his most charming and really annoying Amory.
I highly recommend this series and I can’t wait to to get my hands on An Act of Villany, the fifth book in the series.
fab review! I love the stylish covers too!!

Hallo, Hallo Nicki,
I’ve been looking for new audiobooks I can find to listen when I resume Scribd this Spring – Cosy Mysteries are definitely ones I enjoy myself. When I saw you were reviewing this one I wanted to drop by and read your thoughts as I realised they have the whole series on audiobooks – from what I can gather which would make this a keen on place on my Spring Listen List!
I recently highlighted another Cosy Mystery series (the Murder Will Follow Mysteries) by Vivian Conroy – have you listened to this one? I was most intrigued by the narrator.
I’ve just listened to the sampler for The Essence of Malice and have added it to my 2020 TBR via LibraryThing – as I wasn’t sure if I’d prefer the narrator or the books in print. Happily the narrator had a lovely cadence of presence and her voice truly felt like a series I would enjoy listening for several installments!
Thanks for highlighting the villianary and also how the characters just love to get their hands into sleuthing even if they haven’t much to go on ahead of time! Truly appreciated finding this!

Hi there this is one of favourite series especially on audio. I’ve read the latest book as an ARC but much prefer the audiobooks as I love the narrator as she has become the voices of the main characters for me. I can also recommend the Maisie Dobbs series as well. 😀

Ooh I need to get back into Maisie Dobbs! I hosted one of her books for a blog tour and fell in LOVE. However its the first Historical series my Mum is keen on reading herself and I wanted to await when we both have time to devout to reading/listening to it as I feel guilty to restart it without her now! 😦
I am overjoyed hearing you say this about this series – that is the kind of narrator I prefer to find myself and am wicked grateful to hear that is your main takeaway! I have the same attachments myself – esp Alison Campbell as Kay Hunter!

I’ve not heard of her before. I love discovering new favourite narrators. In fact I’m listening to The Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain and the narrator Susan Bennett is brilliant, I’m definitely adding her to my faves list. 😀

This does sound like a lot of fun Nicki. I do not want to start a new series until I get caught up on some of my others, but in audiobook form, it does make it more inviting. Great review.
