Six Degrees of Separation is a monthly meme hosted by Kate @ Books Are My Favourite and Best. The idea is to start with the book that Kate gives us and then create a chain of six books, each suggested by the one before…
Well I loved taking part in this meme so much last month that I thought I’d join in again! 😀

This month Kate’s starter book is Second by Rachel Cusk, a book that’s been nominated for this year’s Booker Prize.
I tend to stay away from books that have been nominated for the big prizes as I haven’t enjoyed the ones I’ve attempted to read. One book was a Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan that I DNF’d because I didn’t have clue what was gong on and really didn’t like the characters!
Another book that had unlikeable characters was Not a Happy Family by Shari Lapena, but I’m happy to tell you that the mystery kept me listening.
That Night by Gillian McAllister was also about a family, but the characters were more likeable, plus she’s one of my favourite authors.
Lisa Jewell is another favourite author who writes about families, and The House We Grew Up In is a fantastic book that looks at the dark side of family life.
Thinking of the dark side of family life reminds me of Good Me, Bad Me by Ali Land a psychological thriller that I read years ago, and can still remember how shocking it was.
My Perfect Girlfriend by Karen Hamilton was shocking, but also fun because the main character Juliet was just bonkers! I’m laughing thinking about her now as I don’t think I’ve met another character quite like her. 😆
Starting with Book Prize nominee via another prize winner and five thrillers I loved, hope you enjoyed the trip! 😀
Next month the starting book will be The Lottery by Shirley Jackson
I love the sound of this, think I’ll join in next month 😊

It really is wonderful. You can work on it for the whole month, and it really is fun to find the connections.

Great chain Nicki. I like your starting point and am going to steal it because I have not read this book. I also haven’t read a few of the ones on your list, so I am going to add them to my TBR.

Thanks Carla I’ve enjoyed getting back into this meme and reminiscing about old books!

I did it earlier in the year, but then hadn’t read the books we started with. I realized that a lot of people still participated when they hadn’t read it, so I am jumping back in. 📚😀

I like your chain! Great idea to focus on mystery thrillers. I’ve often considered to do a chain with that genre only, but I may wait until the starting book is a mystery (if that will ever happen). You made me curious about The Perfect Girlfriend – I love bonkers characters! 🤣

Thanks I just go wherever my mind takes me! If you love bonkers characters you’ll love The Perfect Girlfriend! 😂

Since I love psychological thrillers, your chain is right up my alley. I’ve ordered the audiobook of Good Me Bad Me. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve not read Goon Squad, despite it being a book that so many have said I ‘must’ read.
I do enjoy the fact that regardless of the starting book, bloggers can twist chains to their favourite genre.

I love how often you mentioned “family” throughout this post! Says a lot of what you like to find in your psychological thrillers! 😛
