Synopsis: “An elderly spinster has been poisoned in her country home. Everyone blamed Emily’s accident on a rubber ball left on the stairs by her frisky terrier. But the more she thought about her fall, the more convinced she became that one of her relatives was trying to kill her. On April 17th she wrote her suspicions in a letter to Hercule Poirot. Mysteriously he didn’t receive the letter until June 28th… by which time Emily was already dead.“
My Review
I really enjoyed this audiobook. I think it’s one of my favourite Poirot mysteries, and I’ve listened to quite a few lately.
I didn’t know this story so had no expectations about it all, which was really good. It’s book 16 in the Poirot mysteries and was told by Captain Hastings, Poirot’s friend. Their relationship was very funny at times, as Hastings just didn’t understand what’s was going on and Poirot got quite frustrated with him. Oh to be as clever as Hercule Poirot!
I loved the mystery and of course fell for all the red herrings as usual, not guessing the murderer at all. I also really enjoyed the inclusion of a dog in the story, Bob the Terrier, who is the dumb witness in the title.
I loved Hugh Fraser’s performance, he really is the perfect narrator for these books, and I particularly enjoyed his portrayal of Bob. I can’t wait to get back to listening to more next month when Scribd stops rationing me.
Highly recommended if you enjoy cosy mysteries.

I haven’t had the pleasure of listening to this one, nor am I familiar with the story, but you’re right about Hugh Fraser being the perfect narrator for the stories.

I enjoy Hugh Fraser’s narration too but I haven’t listened to this one yet. Such a pain when Scribd cuts you off, isn’t it.

I have like 80 books on my list but at the end of the Scribd month, I never seem to be in the mood for the ones that I can actually listen to 🤦🏼♀️😂
